Pattern Notes:

  1. This pattern is written from the bottom-up.
  2. The band of the hat is worked in rows first, the body of the hat in rounds.
  3. Ch 1 does not count as a stitch.
  4. This Pattern is written in Toddler (Child, Teen/SmallAdult, Large Adult)
  5. Be sure to check gauge in the body portion. If the stitch is worked too tightly it will affect the fit of the hat.

Pattern:
Band: Using G hook and CA:

  • To Start: Make a Ch of 8 (8,9,9)
  • Row 1: SC in the 2nd Ch from the hook and across . 7(7,8,8)
  • Row 2: Ch 1, turn. SC in the BLO of each stitch until there is 1 stitch left, SC in the last stitch.  7(7,8,8)
  • Rows 3-64 (64, 72, 80): Repeat Row 2. The band should measure 16 (16, 18, 20) inches unstretched.
    • If the band doesn’t match the measurements, add or remove rows. When you move to the Hat Body and SC around, make sure that Round 1 ends up having 64 (64, 72, 80) SCs
    • Fold the band in half so that the working end is lined up with the chain end. SLST the 2 ends together. Turn the band inside-out so that the seam is on the inside of the hat. Begin working along the side of the band.
    • Continue to Hat Body, Locate the size that you are working on.

Hat Body: Switch to H hook and remember to be mindful of the gauge.

Toddler

  • Round 1: Ch 1. Work 64 SCs around, as evenly as possible. SLST in the first stitch to join.     (64)
  • Round 2: Ch 1. With CA, SC in the first stitch. In the next stitch insert your hook and pull a loop in the CB, then finish the stitch using the CA. *With CA, SC in the next. Drawstring Cord Instructions:

  • Make a cord of 54 inches. Adjust length if need-be.
  • Lay the bag flat with the seam-side up.
  • Find the center-most Ch1 space from Round 24. Add a stitch marker if need-be.

  • Leave the center-most Ch1 space empty. Weave the cord in and out of the Ch1 spaces of Round 24.
  • Optional: Add 2 Beads or cord locks on the cord to help when bunching.

  • Repeat M Round 3 until the Mesh portion of the bag measures approximately:
    • Small: 6 inches
    • Medium: 8.5 inches

      • After the last repeat of M Round 3, Do not SLST into the Ch1 space.
      • Ch1 and move on to M Round 4:  
  • M Round 4: 2HDC in each Ch1 space around. SLST to join.

    • M Round 5 is  the round that the drawstring will be weaved through.

Drawstring

  • Make a Ch long enough to fit around the top plus 3 inches. For me this took:
    • Small: Ch 61
    • Med: Ch81
    • Sack: Ch101
    • Due to tension differences, you may need to add more Chs.
  • Weave Drawstring in and out of the Ch1 spaces of M Round 5.
  • Put the 2 ends through a bead and tie a knot at the end.

Main Book Insert Pocket

  • To Start: Make a Ch of 36
  • Round 1: HDC in the 2nd Ch from the hook and each Ch across. Turn so that you can begin working down the other side of the Ch. HDC in each Ch along the other side of the Ch. Do not SLST. Use a SM and begin working in continuous Rounds.   (70)
  • Round 2: HDC in the Back Loop and the 3rd loop of each stitch around. Move SM as you work in continuous rounds.   (70)
  • Repeat Round 2 until the Main Book insert measures approximately 5.5 inches.
  • Finish off by making a SLST in the next stitch.
  • Break Yarn
  • Weave in ends.

Spine Portion.

  • To Start: Lay the Main Book Insert Pocket Flat. Locate the stitch that is furthest to the bottom corner of the last round worked. Attach yarn. Ch1

  • Row 1: HDC in the Back Loop and the 3rd loop of  the stitch you attached to and the next 34 stitches. Ch1 and turn.   (35)
  • Row 2(WS): HDC in the each stitch across. Ch1 and turn.   (35)
  • Row 3(RS): Repeat  Row 2. (35)
  • Repeat Rows 2-3 until the spine portion measures approximately 3.5 inches. Make sure the last Row worked is the RS. Ch 35
    • Both pocket openings should be on the inside of the cover when it is closed.

Accessory Pocket

  • Round 1: HDC in the Back Loop and the 3rd loop of the first worked stitch of the last row and each stitch around. Move SM and work in continuous rounds.  (70)
  • Round 2: HDC in the Back Loop and the 3rd loop of each stitch around. Move SM as you work in continuous rounds.  (70)
  • Repeat Round 2 until the Accessory Pocket measures approximately 4.25 inches. Keep working HDCs until you get to the next corner of the pocket.
  • Finish off  by making a SLST in the next stitch and breaking your yarn.
  • Leave a long enough tail to sew the opening shut.
  • Turn the Accessory Pocket inside-out. With yarn needle and the tail, sew the opening closed
  • Turn Rightside-out.
  • Weave in ends.

Pen Holder

  • To Start: Make a Ch of 6
  • Row 1: SC in the 2nd Ch from the hook and each Ch across. Ch1 and turn.  (5)
  • Rows 2-4: SC in each stitch across. Ch1 and turn.  (5)
  • Row 5: SC in each stitch across.   (5)
  • Finish off, Leave a long enough tail to sew.
  • With Yarn needle and tail. Secure the piece to the Spine Portion. Leave the top and bottom of the holder unsewn.
  • Weave in ends.

Small Accessory Pocket

  • To Start: Make a Ch of 18
  • Row 1: HDC in the 2nd Ch from the hook and each Ch across. Ch1 and turn.   (17)
  • Row 2: HDC in each stitch across. Ch1 and turn.  (17)
  • Repeat Row 2 until the Small Accessory Pocket Measures approximately 3.5 inches.
  • Finish off, Leave a long enough tail to sew.
  • With Yarn needle and tail. Secure the piece to the bottom portion of the Larger Accessory Pocket. Leave the top unsewn.  
  • Weave in ends.

Tie

For the tie, I just took two long pieces of cotton yarn and put beads on each end.

 

Other Suggestion:

Add a Zipper to the accessory pocket to make a pouch

RIGHT SIDE

  • Locate the first Row from the Flap.
  • Locate the first stitch from the first Row from the Flap
  • Attach Yarn to the same stitch that the first stitch from the flap is worked into

In the hole left for the thumb, attach yarn and Ch1.

T Round 1: Evenly work 11 HDC around the opening. Slst to join and Ch1.   (11)

T Round 3: HDC in each stitch around. Slst to join and Ch1.    (9)

Repeat Round 3 until the thumb measures 1.5 inches.

T Round 4: SC2tog in the first 8 stitches. SC in the last stitch. Slst to join.   (5)

Finish off. Leave a tail. Weave tail in and out of the remaining 5 stitches. Pull tight to close the hole. Make a knot to secure the thumb portion. Weave in ends.

To Start: Work 5 Scs in a Magic Circle. SLST to join and Ch1.    (5)

Round 1: 2 SC in each stitch around. Slst to join and Ch 1.    (10)

Round 2: 2 SC in the first stitch, SC in the next stitch. *2 SC in the next stitch, 1 SC in the next stitch.* Repeat ** around. Slst to join and Ch1.    (15)

Round 3: 2 SC in the first stitch, SC in the next 2 stitches. *2 SC in the next stitch, 1 SC in the next 2 stitches.* Repeat ** around. Slst to join and Ch1.   (20)

For Left Mitten

Round 9: HDC in the first 23 stitches. Loosely Ch 4, Skip 4, HDC in the next. HDC in the rest of the stitches around. Slst to join, Ch1 and TURN.   (25 HDC and 4 Chains)
